Frontline Football Bosnia vs. Serbia
| I viewed this originally from the Genocide in Bosnia blog, linked at left. A feature video excellently narrated by Ben Anderson, it exposes some of the extreme nationalism that still permeates much of Bosnian-Serbian relations. | |

Yes it's bad, but remember that we are speaking of a subculture, football hooligans, and people do eventually outgrow being football hooligans.
Some of them grow up to follow Arkan. There's an interesting discussion of Franklin Foer's book at http://verywellsaid.com/titles/h/how-soccer-explains-the-world-an-unlikely-theory-of-globalization-0060731427.php
and a Wikipedia article on Delije at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delije
Maybe the thing to consider is whether sport is a good or a bad thing. I know that the majority of soccer hooligans eventually get over this undesireable behavior, either because they go to jail or because grow up, get a job, get married, take on regular worldly responsibilites, etc.
Yes some do grow up to follow guys like Arkan, I don't know what you do about that.
Sport's advocates say that it's supposed to let out aggressions in a healthy way, as opposed to war letting out aggressions in a very unhealthy way. It might be so if people actually PARTICIPATE, but maybe being a spectator is different. This is just a thought, I'm going to go and look at those links, because they sound interesting.
It is interesting how different backgrounds give rise to power. In America, senior positions of government are held by lawyers. Perhaps because of our litigious nature?
Western European power is more often held by lifelong bureaucrats.
Countries like Croatia, Bulgaria, and Greece have been governed by academic historians - perhaps who can foment national identity as part of a larger historical region, or clarify foreign threats.
In much of the FRY, those affiliated with soccer clubs have risen to power, as with Arkan in Belgrade and Karadzic in Sarajevo.
I have to wonder if this is really much different from soccer hooligan violence in general. Not that I'm defending it, but "ultras" and hoolies all over Europe resort to ugly far-right racism and xenophobia.
For me the most interesting thing was the comment made in the restaurant by the young Muslim Alan. He talked of 500 years of hatred and "7 or 8 genocides in the last 150 years". Yet there are people who still insist that the animosity which led to the most recent war was invented by politicians.
Also, Ben Anderson seems very puzzled that someone whose mother or father is half-Serb or half-Muslim could be so nationalistic. This is part of the complexity of the region. Some people just "feel Serb", as the Serbian football fan explained. You come across this all the time in the former Yugoslavia. Westerners don't grasp this sentiment very easily.
I saw the Bosnian fans waving Turkish flags. I know it's done to rile the Serbs but it is part of the Bosnian identity crisis which is unlikely to be resolved in our lifetime.
Altogether an interesting but slanted presentation

mvb, if you want a decent quality version to show to a class you could contacting the British Council in France - http://www.britishcouncil.org/france/
as this was originally shown on BBC2.
Owen, thank you for addressing MVB's query. I enjoyed the discussion of soccer and globalization at the Foer book site as well.
MVB, do let us know how your class goes!
A "subculture"...come on now! Haahahhahaa!
And yet we have all learned nothing in over ten years! LOL!
As my current language lessons go...rrrarrraarrra!
Figure that one out!
What we need here are true Balkan Citizens to come to the discussion table...not those who think they are Balkan!
Yea, I know...I've already offended many...SORRY!
Jebiga!
fuck serbs srbe na vrbe long live bosnia
ok, there are some things that were not portrayed correctly in that documentary
people are not looking after arkan in serbia
supporters didn't answer the questions related to arkan not because they fear of any retailiation but because they think he is not that imortant to their supporters movement
they see themselves not as arkan followers but as red star fans & serbs who are aware of their cultural & historical identity
the way they see themselves is actually the problem because that picture is somewhat close to the picture germans had of themselves in ww2, a sort of heavenly nation that is better smarter more beautifll than others
due to the picture they have created they think that the whole world is against them just because they are better than everyone else in the world
as far as hooliganism is concerned that is completly diffrent issue
that kind of behaviour is present all the time no matter against they play
whether they play Partizan belgrade or ManUtd or some bosnian or croatian club that sort of agression is always there and is typical of all serbian supporters
Dowla, Belgrade
Srbe na vrbe?!?
Do you even know what that means?!?!
I recently went to watch Croatia vs Russia in the Croatian Ultras stand and was quite appalled by what i saw as a virtually identical level of hatred and intolerance, quite unlike anything i have ever seen before (even as an English football supporter).. Looking at the wide age range of these supporters, I really do not think that this is something that serbs/croats/bosnians are likely to grow out of in a hurry..
Natko, a Serb with a Muslim father? Please, that's a bunch of non sense. He's a sell out who refuses to face his own heritage. His attitude contradicts everything Yugoslavia stood for. They should make a show on how he became a 'Serb.' That ought to be interesting.
